Well it rained and rained and then rained some more! the weekend wasnt a total wash out though! lots of time to get to cuddle the current residents and particularly the long termers (cats whose owners who are either unwell, in prison or are unwell themselves) dear Mickey has had his operation and he looks great, a lot less wobbly! He adores playing with the furry coloured mice so if you pop into the sanctuary make sure you give it a go! Luna is such an amazing cat he deserves a fantastic home when he can be rehomed he is the most human like cat I have ever met he loves to go for walks, make friends with all the resident cats (whether they want to or not!) and be cuddled. He has a great little pink nose and pink padded feet!). Despite being relatively quiet at the weekend we still managed to have more than one or two strange questions asked of us! Do you have any pure white breed kittens? How do I go about breeding?! Apart from wanting to scream very loudly are you mad we are a rescue centre! we calmly referred them to the 50+ unwanted cats currently in our care and showed them the 300+ homeless kittens we have cared for over the summer including the everso skinny stressed cat mums and the tired volunteers! Hopefully due to the recent cold spell the number of pregnant cats coming in should be slowing down! Lots of lovely cat wise people also popped in the top attraction this weekend was Betty, a long hair white and tortie 2 year old girl who adores a fuss, Molly a dark tortie, 4 year old placid girl who enjoys affection particularly sitting on your lap and Mische a rather plump cuddly huggable girl who likes to roll over and have her tummy tickled! P.S another question this weekend do dogs are cats get on? (see Max the dog testing cat in action!)well not always but we generally home kittens to breeds of dogs known to get on with cats or we will home cats to a house with dogs where the cats have come from a home with dogs. Like any new relationship time and TLC makes a world of difference! TTFN x

Wow one week off on holiday and everything has changed! which is fantastic to see that so many cats have found new homes. I was particularly pleased to see dear Tom, the cat who lost his tail in a road traffic accident has found a new pad! I hear he has settled in well. Fortunately my holiday was dotted with a few cats to stroke and a visit to the zoo which amazingly had their own resident domestic cat who gets free roam to wander about! So many new faces at the sanctuary to get to know and already I have my favourites! If your looking for a super companion then look no further! Petal, is a fantastic 8 year old tabby girl just waiting to sit on a lap she loves a fuss and cuddle a real human lover! Molly, a deep dark tortie wasted no time making herself comfy on a Kookie with a K! is very pretty and timid cat who hides in her posh bed but loves you to give her attention and a fuss. "Midge" a chubby huggable white and black girl only two years old and already in need of a new home. Gorgeous Mickey the cat who thinks he is a baby is off for his operation shortly he really is the most friendly cat I have ever met! So many more! Rosie, Mo, Blackie the list is endless we really do have tonnes of fab cats! A very busy Sunday today rehoming lots of cats and kittens about 18-19 reserved or have already gone! A few are just waiting for their neuter before they can be collected! So dont delay if you are looking for a cat pop along to the sanctuary!

The blogger is an award winner yeah! very excited and surprised to hear myself and a fellow volunteer for The Cinamon Trust have won an award! The Cinamon Trust cares for pets often from the elderly or provides short term care for people who go into hospital. Myself and a lovely lady called Dee volunteer to walk an 11 year old dog called Pippin for an elderly lady. I would love a dog but with 4 nervous cats a dog is unlikely to calm the situation! The Cinamon Trust also cares for cats and all kinds of small animals. Being a volunteer can be a lot of fun but so very tiring esp. if you spend a weekend caring for the cats at the sanctuary with so many kittens! Chestnut Cat Sanctuary was busy today with 8 cats finding new homes and 5 more mummy cats reserved to go home this week. Paws of love to Charlie, Tiger Lily, Rosie, Susie, Lucky, Elsa and Kiki, and all the kittens who left the sanctuary. All the hard work is worth it to see you go off to your new homes with TLC coming in abundance! Some of my favourites at the sanctuary include the gorgeous "Beanie",a 3 year old girly with bags of energy who loves to sit on your back and snuggle up to your neck and "Tom" a gentle, friendly and placid 10 year old white and black cat who loves to be cuddled. Tom came in due to a road traffic accident in Barking and no longer has a tail. He would fit in a multi-cat house if the other cats are as laid back as him! I cuddled Mickey the little brain damaged boy today and he has a special message for Gillian! "We aka, Alison and Ray havent forgotten you and think of you hard at work on a Saturday hope your S.B skills are not being put to use!!" So much to update you all on where do I start?! well if your looking for a cat / kitten I wouldnt hang about for long 18 cats and kittens found homes this weekend with another 11+ reserved to go shortly. We hope they all settle in their new homes and enjoy the TLC they so rightly deserve! Thanks to all our volunteers you must have worked your socks off this weekend! Our gorgeous long term residents Molly and Kitten (expertly homed last week) have put their paws on their new pad which is fantastic we are so pleased for them both! (we would love some photos please!) For those of you who have been at the sanctuary a while you may remember Poppet (one of the rarer ginger females) we get in from time to time. Poppet was a very sick cat who had a litter of kittens and couldnt put on any weight. We were so very worried about her at the sanctuary. Well hopefully I will be able to get a picture soon of Poppet as she returned to the sanctuary this week for her holidays in the cat boarding centre and she looks magnificent! A once very frail looking girl now could rival a Lioness. Her mane of ginger fur and fabulously huge silky paws are a tribute to her owner's tender loving care. I can not fully give justice in words to just how amazing she looks!
We have had a strong response to our £1000 Mickey appeal, our little sick kitten who is awaiting his brain operation. He is a dear to cuddle, so affectionate and also so playful when you throw a mouse his way (toy not real!).
A small appeal for 4 special cats Duncan Smokey. Pansy and Custer.I was there when they arrived at the sanctuary a couple of months ago from a home in Goodmayes where their owner had health problems and was unable to care for them any more. They are a shy bunch who obviously had a strong relationship with their owner but are taking time to adjust to the sanctuary and the large volume of different people who enter their pen on a daily basis. They can all be homed singularly but would benefit from another cat in the household as they are used to a multi cat home. None of them would be suitable with young children and would need a quiet residence. Custer is a tabby and white boy who likes a gentle stroke on the head. He is the shyest of all four. Smokey and Duncan enjoy each others company. They both are happy to be stroked but panic at sudden movements. Pansy is a long hair tabby very pretty looking! She is the most confident of the four and enjoys to be fussed if you are sitting beside her. For a cat loving household one of these four would slip in with no trouble at all. You would barely notice they are there! So why not give one of them a chance? They have been over looked for some time as we get a lot of families in looking for confident felines. And lastly we appeal for a home for Patch. A smashing cat who is getting on in her years. She gives such great lap cuddles and really enjoys being able to rest her paws on your knees! Patch would make such a loyal companion who, unlike younger cats, would like to keep you company and stay close by your side. If you are looking for someone warm to relax in the evening with Patch is all ready to join you on your lap! (this is not a dating service but Patch from experience is likely to beat lots of dates you may have had!) She would suit an indoor quiet life with someone who has time to give her all the cuddles she loves to receive! TTFN for now x

A quick update for all you dedicated fans! The fabulous fantastic feline Molly and Kitten have finally found a new home! Kitten's soulful "hug me now! eyes won the heart of their new owners. We hope they are settling in well and are looking forward to hearing how they are getting on next week. Oh dear It looks like I have some seriously tough competition! The simply gorgeous cat called "Mickey" has stolen my boyfriend's heart and is liable to steal yours too if you allow yourself to come and meet this exceptional four legged friend. Words simply can not describe how gorgeous Mickey is. You really do have to meet him to appreciate the delight of his delicately soft fur and wonderful gentle character. Mickey is waiting for a vital operation which will cost the sanctuary £1000. He was left on the sanctuary porch recently with a note requesting for us to take care of him as his owner could not afford his veterinary care and was being encouraged to put him to sleep rather than treat him. As the sanctuary does not have unlimited funds all the volunteers find it so hard when cats who require extensive medical care are left at the sanctuary and Mickey was the second one in the same week. However we are putting out a strong fundraising appeal to anyone who feels they can donate towards this fabulous cause and if you would like a scrumptious cuddle in return I am sure Mickey (or Ray!) would oblige!

The FAT Boy 2000! A scratch post suitable for Tigers and Lions or my four domestic cats! (recommended to me by the gorgeous "Mittens" Cat who was a long term resident at Chestnuts she loves her fat boy!) It is the largest post I have ever seen which may double up as an "extra" chair should we be short at Christmas!!
Lots and lots of adorable cats and kittens at the sanctuary this weekend. The little lip smacking delight below is part of a fab litter currently residing in Pen 17 who certainly wont hang around for long. There are only two bundles of fur left from the litter and mum as Panda, Domnio and Tokio have all found new homes. How could you resist such adorable balls of fluff?! Thank you so much to Saret and Micheal for doing such an amazing job at fostering. The kittens look fabulously healthy and mum looks like she has been on a spa holiday! (any chance you fancy fostering humans?!). Good luck to Honey, Pepsi, Kipper, Pansey and Kiki. A small appeal to anyone looking to take on an adorable kitten who lost an eye through neglect. "Summer" is a white and tabby three month old bundle of energy looking for either an indoor home with someone at home during the day or with limited access to the outdoors. She likes other cats but is very human friendly so would be fine on her own with lots of human company. Spotting cars on roads is going to be more of a challenge so a quiet peaceful road would be most appropriate with a large garden. And talking of summer lets hope we see some sunshine at some point today!! TTFN x x

We are sad and happy for Lorna, one of our wonderful Saturday Volunteers who is leaving us very soon for the US of A! I know that Lorna will miss us (and the cats!) as much as we will miss her. It will be very hard to say goodbye but I also would advise anyone near her on her last Saturday to frisk her pockets very careful as I fear one or may a dozen of our cutie kittens may go missing! I am afraid it is unlikely they will let you take a kitten in your suitcase no matter how hard you try! We are planning to lock her in the kittens pens for the whole day on her last Saturday as I am sure she will need her fix of kitten love! Thank you so much for all your help!!!

This week at the sanctuary has been incredibly busy so much so I dont think I have had a chance to even sit down once! Mothers and kittens arriving from all corners of the east end of London. The majority of which bought from unscrupulous pet shops. Those people working on the front line of animal welfare do a staggeringly amazing job. I know I could not contend with people with mistreat their pets and still be smiling. If you ever fancy popping into the sanctuary just to see how hard we work please remember we also need energy and a choccie biscuit or two would go down a treat! Happy Birthday to me! a BIG thank you everyone for the flowers and perfume was very kind of you all! Anyone would think I like cats from the cards I have got! The M & M twins even managed to write me a card and buy me a present with their kitty pennies! (If your wondering they bought me a grey kitten with gorgeous blue eyes - the cuddly toy type!) How clever are they?! Up to date pictures attached! They had their first vaccinations this week it was a stressful time for all including their adopted mum but they were very brave and it was all over in a matter of minutes. I think they are looking fab! feel free to disagree (not!!!) A few updates from the sanctuary! Tizz has found herself a new home as well as Indie, Suka and Florrie!

We are all starting to feel very concerned for dear old Molly and Kitten they have been with us for a very long time. It would be smashing to arrive at the sanctuary and see them gone. They are looking for a quiet loving home without young children to rest their paws in. Kitten is totally fab in stunningly good condition for 17 years old loves a lap, cuddle, groom and fuss. He is a ginger delight! Molly, Kittens beautiful mother is so pretty to look at! She also adores being on your lap so much so she often kicks Kitten off. At 18 years old their is plenty of energy in her! Both are A1 fit, enjoy fine dining and the occasional cat nap! A BIG thank you to all our fabulous volunteers, you have to deal with some very stressful awful situations. We really do appreciate your calmness and dedication to ensure that humanity wins through. It is endearing to know their are so many good kind people to outweigh the rest. Thank you. Paws from the cats in your care.

Miaow to all your dedicated summer blog fans nice to have you with us! As we are finding at the sanctuary many of you have gone on your holidays and as such kitten rehoming has gone quiet. There are a couple of gems at the sanctuary right now that would be such a shame to miss if your looking for a purrrfect moggie friend but more of them later.... What with the heat and humidity we wonder at the sanctuary if nutty season has started. The number of enquiries for kittens to order is staggering. Surprisingly enough we dont have a kitten choosing service available where we bring a selection of kittens to your home for the human folk to choose the one they want! The stress that could cause to our gorgeous felines is immense. A little bit of effort is required to indicate to us that it is not just a passing whim to get a cat as they can live for a very long time. We always say it is a big responsibility and if you cant make it then dont. Our oldest resident who is in the care of a volunteer is Hamish (going to be 30 years old this Christmas - def. one for the newspapers!) The number of requests for specific colours right down to the shade of fur is amazing i.e a ginger female with a bit of white, a blue grey etc. A rescue centre such as Chestnut Sanctuary has no control whatever so ever over what kittens and cats come in as they are all either homeless or collected by RSPCA inspectors as mistreated or cruelty cases, we dont breed to order. Question? What do you call something with 4 paws, whiskers, and a miaow? - a little angel (aka cat!) whether black, white, tabby or ginger. Pet colour is immaterial go for the one that looks at you with adoring eyes, is lively but loves a cuddle. Talking of which my little gems of the week are no 1. A tiny black kitten who has a hint of golden brown tones in the sunlight. I wont say exactly where he is in the sanctuary as if your keen you will meet him no doubt but he is the most snuggly friendly little chap I have ever met. He loves to cuddle right close to your neck and the purr like a telephone is to die for! 2. Summer - a white and tabby girl brought in as a cruelty case by the RSPCA as the owner refused to treat her eye infection and has subsequently resulted in her losing the sight in one eye. A silky soft girl with plenty of love and affection to give! (needs to live indoors as unlikely to see road traffic in time). Finally I thought I would share the fun of a Monday at the sanctuary, suffice to say it is a very busy day as anyone who needs to rehome their cat is advised to call Monday morning to see if we have homed enough over the weekend to generate space to bring in more. What is most impressive is the way in which people expect their problems to be sorted immediately with no thought whatsoever to the animal. If the reasons for rehoming e.g. emigrating tomorrow was even slightly believable then this country would be seriously devoid of humans!! The stories are staggering so if anyone should want to volunteer avoid Mondays like the plague by about 9.10am (we open at 9am) the number of calls from people threatening to dump their cats is overwhelming. We always do the best we can but often have to ask people to wait and work with us until we can accommodate a space.
P.S the peanut M & M twins aka Millie and Murdoch are doing great - they have bags of energy and are extremely mischievous as we found out yesterday when Murdoch discovered you can jump into the bath but you cant always get back out again! I need eyes in the back of my head!
P.P.S it is not just cats that take up my time - me and 5 other cars stopped for a sheep in Epping who had obviously lost his way. It was great for my faith in humanity to see the number of people who stopped to help this animal avoid serious injury and no it had nothing to do with me lying in the middle of the road forcing cars to stop!! - they stopped of their own accord and managed to get the woolly fellow back to safety. So.... I guess you are all wondering what the little mischief makers have been up to this week eh?! well I am pleased to report the progress of our two little kittens Millie and Murdoch is good. They have been in their new home 1 week today. It is wonderful to be able to see them develop and grow right before your eyes. Which i hasten to add they should be doing as they are eating for England! They currently manage to wolf down 1 tin of kitten loaf each per day. Last week when they arrive they were only on 1/2 a tin so that just shows how quickly their appetites increase. Also interesting to note here how huge a pregnant cat's and nursing mother's appetite is. They can get through huge amounts of food when feeding their young. It is very sad to see a cat physically drained from the demands of keeping up with their babies eating requirements hence the all important need to neuter your cat! Anyway back to the terrible twosome. They mastered the use of their litter tray almost immediately and have fortunately not had any accidents as yet. Although the anti-bacterial wipes are on hand should they be needed! They are still in the one room which is important with small kittens as they can get down very small holes and get stuck. The sanctuary volunteers have been contacted on numerous occasions for advice on retrieving kittens from under kitchen floor boards and even from inside a grand piano! So to avoid the immense stress that this can cause it is best to isolate young kittens in one room for at least the first few weeks in a new home to allow them to build their confidence and for their own safety. Millie is the more timid kitten at first but dont let that deceive you as given the opportunity she will bundle in with her brother. This is important part of bonding and is wonderful to watch as two kittens literally become one ball of fur as they play and attack each other! Murdoch loves any toy in particular those attached to a piece of string and has already entangled himself on numerous occasions - always important to remove toys with string attached from the kittens room if they are going to be left unattended for any length of time. We have very fortunately had only one occasion where this advice was not adhered to and whilst we give a lot.....................!! of advice at the sanctuary it is always for the best intentions.

Apologies for the lack of blogger, the blogger went to Bath! (no not my annual wash!) but the beautiful city of Bath for a lovely long weekend. I managed to see the rather large versions of the cats at the sanctuary at Longleat Safari Park lots of lion cubs and tiggers with enormous scratch posts! Obviously I missed the sanctuary follk lots and my gorgeous Pickles who apparently was a bit of a wuss! Anyway to update you all it appears everyone in the UK have gone on holiday yet the kittens keep on coming!! Lots and lots of pregnant mums dumped at the sanctuary with no where to go. The worst case this week was the mum and five kittens found in a suitcase oh dear not the best of news. But like everything in life you have to look at the positive and see that they are now safe in the sanctuary of Chestnuts with lots of lots of loving volunteers to smoother them with TLC. I would particularly like to introduce you to the two gorgeous kittens in the photograph attached as we will be following their progress over the coming weeks and months to let you all know what goes on when you let yourselves take on two devils.... opps I mean cute gorgeous not michievious kittens! Their names are Millie and Murdoch currently 10 weeks old ahhh to be 10 weeks old again!! We will see them as they go through all their care from vaccinations to micro-chipping and neutering. Keep looking on the blog to see what they are getting up to! (P.S rumour has it their new owners are somewhat spoiling them already with I believe, Evian water to drink obviously tap water just isnt their thing!!). TTFN for now! x

He has the most adorable personality and likes to be cuddled all day long! He would make a purrrrfect companion for someone at home during day who is looking for some serious company! so if you work from home or are in and out during the day dont hang around as Mr Handsome wont be either!

Run, swim and cycle! sounds exhausting?! Congratulations and a big THANK YOU from all the cats and volunteers at the sanctuary to Sue Brady for fundraising and completing a very challenging Triathlon on behalf of Chestnut Cat Sanctuary £400+ was raised with much generosity and kindness. (pictures to follow!) We are always extremely grateful for people who go out of their way to support the sanctuary and help care for the vast numbers of unwanted cats and kittens. The sanctuary is, as ever, packed full of cats and the mini versions! (aka Kittens) another busy weekend caring for them all! Am off tomorrow evening to encourage two felines out from under the floorboards armed with a large tin of John West best Tuna and a big torch - i will keep you updated as to my success (failure is not worth considering!). For all of you who like to know the comings and goings Maria and Piper are shortly off on their way hooray! Katie has settled in very well! and Mabel pictured inset is simply PURRRRRFECT! FANTASTIC NEWS! Our dear Katie has found herself a home! Everyone at the sanctuary is delighted to send Katie on her way with lots and lots of kisses and cuddles. A quiet weekend at the sanctuary, however, despite only a few visitors to the sanctuary we still managed to be asked frightening questions. Thought you might like to hear a taster of what goes on at the sanctuary during the crazy weekends! Question. If I go away on holiday can I leave the kittens behind? Answer: Sure I am sure that they will suss out how to open a tin of cat food no problem! (correct answer you can be prosecuted for leaving an animal without access to a daily supply of fresh food or water). We have heard of incidents where people have left buckets of water and buckets of food in order to go away on holiday without having to pay for cat boarding or getting a neighbour in to feed. This is a prosecutable offence) Question: If I take kittens now but dont want both of them later on can I give one away? Answer: why not that seems like the best thing to do?!!! duh! maybe not.... (correct answer - Chestnut Cat Sanctuary has on the very rare occasion been required to involve the RSPCA and police to retrieve a cat which was not being cared for in line with our terms and conditions). The tiny kittens we have are the most popular however they are also the kittens which are guarantted to in 6 months time turn into adult cats. We have a huge influx of 6 month old cats who are no longer kittens. It is very sad but unfortunately true. It is frightening the number of kittens and cats who are not cared for properly. (picture inset I may be cute and cuddly now but................... When I get older, losing my hair, many years from now, will you still need me, will you still feed me..when I am 64?!).

Paws and paws of thank you's! to everyone who helped on Saturday night for the 1st (and possible the last!!) Chestnut Sanctuary Quiz night! It simply could not have happened without your support and it was lovely to have so many willing hands ready to get involved for two very worthwhile charities. We managed to raise a staggering £938! which will be divided equally between Chestnut Cat Sanctuary and Cancer Research UK. Watch this space for the presentation of the cheque to the Cancer Research Volunteer for the Epping Area.

We were extremely pleased to see Margaret and Roger's table scoop the much deserved first prize what an intelligent lot you must be!! I was amazed to come in 3rd - well done my table very impressed with your efforts I have never come close to winning before! we took the risk to play our joker on the "Cats" round which played off with 10/10! Thanks also to everyone who donated such great raffle prizes. I expect the signed rugby books are already up on ebay! I look forward to hearing about the 1000 cheese sandwiches made with the 20kg block of cheddar up for grabs! Danielle and Jackie you did a fantastic job at selling those tickets it who could resist your smiles!! (pictured inset) The quiz master has gone through about 10 packects of throat sweets to ease the pain but it was well worth the agony and tiredness! Thanks to all the behind the scenes volunteers Andy, Pete and Gillian! If I have forgotten you it is by no means intentially It was a fabulous night one to remember for a long time to come. Hope everyone had a great time and is pleased with the monies raised. I always indebited to the support given by those who perhaps have very little free time of their own but still manage to go that extra mile THANK YOU SO MUCH! X

Well it is finally here! for those of you who haven't been to the sanctuary in a while we have been heavily promoting our fabulous fundraising quiz night in honour of both Chestnut Cat Sanctuary and Cancer Research. Hosted by our very own quiz master Mr Dennis Sweeney himself! we are looking forward to a fantastic event tomorrow night with lots of fun to be had for everyone. I hope that everyone involved got the message that entry is subject only to dressing up as a nominated sanctuary rescue cat?! if not don't worry we have spare costumes for you all - prizes available for the best tom cat impression!! (looks not smell please!) Naturally I will be donning the black Lycra cat suit myself in support of the occasion and if you are gullible enough to believe that then I might as well also say all the cats and kittens in the sanctuary have been homed!! Ha ha!! how wonderful it would be to say that unfortunately as ever we are packed to the rafters with dozens of unwanted / mistreated cats and kittens. Having said that our re-homing process is as stringent as ever. Finding the right home for all theses very needy fur babies is of the utmost importance and something we will not compromise on. Apologies for the long blog today......! lots of updates to let everyone know about. Whilst we are triumphing our way to win the quiz (no pressure my table!! but in case you haven't noticed I do like to win!!) a wonderful lady called Sue will be getting much needed restful sleep in anticipation of her triathlon on Sunday in honour of the sanctuary. We wish you all the best Sue and hope the weather stays good for you!! - make sure you pack in the chocolate energy supplies - what a wonderful excuse perhaps you and I Jackie should give it a go?! We are extremely grateful for these acts of kindness and free time give up for sponsored events to support the sanctuary's good work. It is simply stunning how many cats require neutering which is one of the many financial pressures we face on a weekly basis including food, heating and veterinary bills. Finally for those of you avid blog readers I am shortly off to the wonderful annual volunteers tea in the Epping Forest District to give my first ever talk on "what volunteering means to me" fortunately I don't often have to explain how much I enjoy being at the sanctuary because my face often says it all! To sum up however corny it may sound it means so much to simply "be able to actually make a difference" and until I am no longer able to do that I am pretty much hung up on volunteering! (Yes Jackie there is no way you are going to get rid of me!!)

Sunshine at last! the cats at Chestnut Cat Sanctuary enjoyed basking in the sunlight over the weekend. The white furred cat seemed to be the height of popularity as 5 all white cats were re-homed! It is very important with completely white cats to check they aren't deaf or blind. Also in the sunshine you often have to put suncream on the thinnest part of their ears to protect them from being sun burnt! These are high maintenance cats! Lots of other cats and pairs of kittens were happily re homed this weekend. If you are looking for a cat it is also advisable to come early Saturday morning as we are open from 10.30am! By Sunday afternoon lots of our family friendly moggies have already snared themselves a perfect pad! The hard working volunteers will be taking in over 15 new cats and many more kittens this week. It was great to have the opportunity to fund raise at Tescos this weekend where we managed to collect over two trolleys of much needed cat food so a huge thank you to everyone who helped at Tescos, at the sanctuary or who kindly donated always much appreciated!! I love hearing how our rescued cats are getting on in their new homes. It was a privilege to meet Picalo and Jynx our orientals boys (pictured inset) It is a wonderful feeling to know you have been part of the process in caring for and finding them a new loving permanent home. Often it is interesting for people to just to come and visit the sanctuary to see how hard we work to care for all the unwanted cats and kittens. We often get asked by visitors whether the sanctuary is actually for boarding cats and sadly have to reply that actually these are all looking for a new home. The sheer volume of calls on a Monday morning from people wanting to give up their cats is staggering. If you have a loving home to adopt one of our gorgeous residents or free hour or two to help us in our vital work come and see us in action there will be plenty of purrrry cuddles waiting for you!

The rain may have ruined the Bank Holiday weekend for some human folk but down at Chestnut Cat Sanctuary the dedicated volunteers got stuck in as usual with all the cleaning and feeding to ensure all our purring residents were happy and comfortable. We were all very pleased to see single and paried cats Martin, Milly, Elsa, Candy and the little tortie girl go off to their new homes along with many mini cats commonly known as the kittens! It really is staggering how messy a litter of kittens can really be. Yes we really are THAT cute! and available to be reserved to go home shortly from Chestnut Cat Sanctuary. We came in with our gorgeous mum who is a tortieshell single mummy cat also looking for a home. There are four of us to be adopted although we all goes in pairs dont worry you dont have to find space for all four of us kittens! We are having a little tummy trouble it is probably that takeaway last night I knew we should have had fish and chips instead of the curry... Still we can be homed shortly and would certainly appreciate a cuddle in the meantime. As for our mum she deserves a fabulous home for putting up with us climbing all over her for so long. Hi there! My name is Katie and I am one of the many single cats who have been at the sanctuary for some time (I am also Jackie's favourite four legged purrer but dont tell her I told you this as the other cats may get jealous!). My owner was elderly and wanted me as a companion so she fed me just a few too many treats. I have very painful arthritis in my back legs now which makes it very difficult and painful to walk. The fabulous Volunteers at the sanctuary have put me on a special diet called R/D which is basically a biscuit that swells up in my stomach to make me feel full. Someone told me humans also have the same problem but I am sure all the biscuits here come with a chocolate coating?! Anyway I need a home, someone to love me for who I am and if I improve fantastic but if I dont I need lots and lots of love anyway! I dont get up often simply because of the pain. I am very good at using my litter tray though and never make a mess. My owner never let me out so I would be fine to live in a flat. I am not keen on children partly the pain and partly because I dont want to have to share my owner with any two legged creatures. I currently share a pen with Martin. He is fab I am sure he thinks he is a baby in disguise as I have seen him snuggle up on the volunteers lap and give them a little playful nibble or two. He is very stressed being here and tried to escape! Fortunately he has listened to me and realised it is not as bad as he first thought but like all of us much deserving moggies would prefer a home to spend his days in. A beautiful pair of very much loved cats.

Whilst I do not have a favourite cat in the sanctuary (as I am truly in love with them all) Candy and Elsa's story is indicative of why we as a rescue sanctuary truly exist.

It must be extremely distressing to reach an age when you are no longer able to live independently or allowed to have your own pets, particularly at a time when companionship and familiarity is so important.

Elsa and Candy are absolutely gorgeous. I know that none of us volunteers at the sanctuary could imagine not being able to take care of our own cats and have that feline contact. This pair have clearly been spolit to bits and are very much loved by their owner who has sadly gone into a care home. I am sure she is missing them a great deal and did not wish to part from. We are in contact with her and reassure her that her beautiful friends are doing just fine in our care.

Candy and Elsa are looking to be homed as a pair of cats to quiet accomodation. They have lived a peaceful 7 years together and would be a little apprehensive to go to a family with very young children. They adored being groomed which must be done on a regular daily basis. Candy has a sweet little pink nose and Elsa loves to sweep past your legs swishing her tail as she goes. They prefer to eat out of china bowls and both have their own soft leather beds to rest their immaculate paws on.

The entire Yellow Area of Chestnut Cat Sanctuary is now devoted to mums and kittens. The gorgeous warm weather has its downside and has brought us a surge in pregnant cats and abdandoned kittens. Kittens take a lot of extra care particularly in this warm weather to ensure they remain fully hydrated. The size of most 8 weeks kittens means that even a slight am0unt of diarrhoea resulting in water loss can be extremely serious so if you have kittens or would like more information on caring for kittens please feel free to get in touch with one of the Chestnut Volunteers who can provide you with excellent kitten care advice.

Fab fosterers! The pictures speak for themselves! A sneak peak at the fabulous job our kitten fosterers are doing with "Maria" the gorgeous ginger mum and her three tortieshell 3 week old kittens. Maria loves to be massaged and her wonderful human carers are only too happy to oblidge after watching her do all the hard work raising three gorgeous little kittens.

Spring and summer are lovely times at Chetsnut Cat Sanctuary which is often a surprisingly therapeutic relaxing place to be. A capital E for EXHAUSTING! What a wonderful weekend!

An extra large cat from the Tiger family popped in to the see the residents of Chestnut Cat Sanctuary no it's not Jackie or Hamish it really was Tigger the Tiger. Benji certainly looks happy having a cuddle from the oh so strippy one! Fantastic effort from the sanctuary volunteers which is why we celebrate you today on Annual Bank Holiday Monday Volunteer's day you are wonderful! Every pen was meticulously scrubbed and cleaned with a special product to prevent contamination in the build up to the crazy kitten months ahead. Please if you have a cat or if you know someone who has a cat which is not neutered give us a call to find out more about the free netuering schemes available. It really does make a cat's life happier and prevents some of the tens of thousands of unwanted and homeless cats and kittens. He's sugary and sweet with a delicious orangey colour the one, the only TREACLE! has found himself a home. One of the many single cats who have been at the sanctuary for an especially long amount of time.... If you are able to offer one of our long termers a pad to paw around in take a look at some of their fabulous pin ups on the sanctuary website. Katie, Patch, Maddie, Fergus and Tigger have all almost made the sanctuary their purrmanent residence! We wouldn't want any of them thinking there isnt a cosy pad out in the big wide world for them to be fussed and spoilt rotten. Keep posted on the blog for pictures of Treacle as he finally gets his chance to stretch his paws in the fresh air! The wonderful bank holiday has seen many of our rescue cats get their forever homes Oscar, Friend, Kitty, Mini, Maxi, Oliver, Echo, Chole, Treacle!!, Mush and Nemo. We have quite a few paired cats who would be purrfect for someone out at work all day to keep each other company. Hope everyone is looking forward to our celebration Annual Volunteer's day tomorrow. Opps looks like someone was caught cat napping!! I hear on the catvine otherwise known as the grapevine! that there is a rumour going about the sanctuary... all of the cats are whispering from pen to pen the place is a buzz with activity apparently someone has got themselves a new home. I wonder who it could be? I would whisper as quietly as I can but I dont want to let the cats know I have heard! Who could it be I hear you ask? well I will drop a few clues perhaps even six......but not a single digit more! Arent I beautiful! You probably wont recognise me as I was in a sorry state when I arrived at the sanctuary in need of lots of tender loving care! Looking at me know you wouldn't know the difference between a true rescue cat and much loved feline! I am living proof that you can have a happy ending...... Some of my feline friends have found their fairy godmothers this weekend. A sprinkle of fairy dust to Spike, Coco, Nancy aka "Happy Eater", Fabulous Archie, Echo, House and many many more. We wecolmed a fabulous new volunteer "Jo" who is clearly a Cinderella in disguise helping us on our hand and knees to scrub all the pens sparkingly clean! You did a great job we are indebted to volunteers who give up their weekends despite working full time to provide sanctuary care and help towards neutering homeless cats. Whilst we are on the fairy story theme the cats are very much looking forward to my Prince Charming returning soon with a rather large mouse... I wonder who that could be....? answers on a postcard pls! And finally..... for all of you who are interested to find out more about the sanctuary whether you are keen to join us to get stuck in with making the pens sparkling bright, fancy your hand at fundraising or can spare a few hours in the week to give a little extra TLC to some of our residents why not come along on Volunteer's Day Bank Holiday Monday between 12-2pm to find out more from our great volunteer's team about how you can get involved. Hi Everyone! Fabulous Friday!! time for your update on all the goings on at the sanctuary. Lots of news to tell you but first a small request. I have been asked by Epping Forest Volunteers Bureau to give a short talk on what volunteering means to me. I think we have a fantastic team of volunteers at the sanctuary and would be keen to know your best bits of volunteering! Whether it is bathing an 8 week kitten or fretting strongly about how to manouevre the food bowl near the feral cat who has never felt human touch. I have been at the sanctuary for over 3 years now and have many funny antidotes to share about the pickles I have got myself into but have enjoyed every moment. There have also been huge amount of changes in that time but the ultimate aim remains the same "to provide sanctuary for homeless and mistreated cats". Ok now for the amazing stuff fabulous work done by Terry our resident cat rescuer who was out in force this week. Two 1 week old kittens were found in wasteland. Normally requiring exhausting round the clock hand rearing we decided to see if we could find a surogate mother. Luck was in hand as a gorgeous black and white long hair mum came to the rescue. It was amazing to watch her tend to her two new babies as well as her current four. As soon as they are old enough for photos I will post a picture of them all! It doesnt always work but we are extremely pleased to say they are all content and happy. Lots of wonderful single and paired cats found new homes this week and are clearly already delighting their new owners what fabulous pictures of Jenny and Lula. Super cats, fab homes! What a great weekend effort by all the cat rescue sanctuary volunteers. Kitten season has definitely began with lots and lots of kittens to clean up after. Many thanks to Saret and Michael who done a superb job this weekend on their kitten induction course we think you will be such great foster parents! Dedicated enough to arrive just after 7am on a frosty Sunday morning to get stuck in with making our mums and their babies as comfortable as possible. Dear Patch in Pen A manages to ruin her tidy pen within minutes of it being cleaned we think she is just testing the cleaning skills of us human folk not that we mind! Paws to all the single and paired cats homed including; Huggie Bear, Murko, Twinkle, Spankle, Betty and Pixie.

Lots of fabulous cats still in need of new pads if your looking for a feline rescue cat companion why not come and meet; Katie - she can show you her meal time eating trick why get up when you can breakfast, lunch and dinner in bed??! Tigger - Def. the man of the house who could resist him when you see him groom his girlfriend; it is nature right in front of your eyes! Yippee!!!!!! Jackie is back! and for that we are all truly grateful (humans and cats included!).

A busy weekend for cats arriving for their holidays which they affectionately term kitty prison otherwise know as our cat boarding! We hope all cat sanctuaries are as dedicated as we are to ensuring feline welfare. Some fabulous single and paired cats were paw lickingly gorgeous this week and have found their new permanent homes. It is great to see lap girl Jess with her goofy smile and everso soft fur win the heart of her new owner. We wish Polly lots of love and will all miss her gently snoring in the afternoons! Bagpuss "no tail" endeared a kind family who understand all the TLC he is going to need to get his paws back on the right track. "Cherry aka Snickers" who is off to provide chocolate companionship to "Malteaser" who sadly lost her furry friend recently. Flexy should be nestling his gorgeous chubby face and soft paws in his new pad!

Anyone who knows me would understand I would never dream of having a pechant for one cat over another but two gorgeous cats "Mittens" and "Treacle" have been at the sanctuary for such a long time now. It is wonderful to know they are off the streets in a safe place and being cared for but I truly believe it is their turn to find a new home. They are not suitable for all homes but if you think you could provide the right home for either of these two please email me alison@chestnutcatsanctuary.co.uk neither should be difficult to home but both require a true cat lover who is willingly to see past the frustrations that anyone cat or human would develop having been shut up for so long.

Every year the Chestnut Cat Sanctuary has inspections by the Local Council licensing Authority and the RSPCA, to ensure our pens and buildings are properly maintained and that the cats & kittens, while in our premises, receive the highest care in both loving attention and, just as importantly, in a safe and healthy environment. They have to ensure we adhere to a code of practice that adequate temperatures are maintained, the risk of spreading disease is minimised, the premises are hygienic, and the list goes on.

On the 27th. March the RSPCA carried out their annual inspection and we hope that in due course we will be given a clean bill of health.

These visits are not seen as a nuisance visit because they do give us the latest good housekeeping advice, and after all, we are only interested in the welfare of the cat. It was found, for instance, one of the areas temperature gauges was malfunctioning, so it brought it to our attention and took 2 minutes to fix. They also took the opportunity to inspect our annual Council License issued by the local Welfare animal officer. They are there also to protect our managing local RSPCA branch , ensuring the cats and kitten adoptions are being homed in a reasonable time to protect the branch from spiralling costs and vet bills.

We await the report, which is sent to our branch (South West Essex RSPCA) who will then advise us accordingly or recommend improvements. Fingers crossed! It is always the aim of the Cat Sanctuary to outguess these official visits to make sure there is nothing to criticise. Looks like we got caught out on the temperature gauge. We see it every day and after a while don’t notice it. Still, no harm done and at least that was easy to fix.

A crackingly busy Easter weekend for cats arriving and leaving Chestnut Cat Sanctuary. I hope all you regular blog readers are keeping it up with it all; I know I am exhausted!
New homes were found this weekend for Dorothy and Toto, Elvis, Twinkle, Katie, Milly, Lilly, Koko, Nemo, Felix, Georgie, Scoobie, Tigger, and four pairs of kittens. It was great to see Millie, aka "Essex Girl", coming in for her Easter holidays along with many other cats who we have happily re-homed to loving new pads.
Lots of fab cats looking for their purrrfect pads have a look as Tonka is doing (picture inset) and keep up-to-date with all the news! Some of the star entries this week include gorgeous Jess such a pretty face! Marmalde a really round cat! Sooty a great companion, Mikey a timid ginger and white boy, Maxi and Minnie a really friendly twosome! Also just in "oriental" pair of gorgeous 3 year olds boys so silky and smooth!

What a surprise same old story! My owners thought if they left me behind when they moved I would be able to find food, water and shelter. Now I know that cats are extremely clever but...................come on human folk lets have a bit of a reality check! If they had really cared for me and were an ounce of a decent human being they wouldnt have left me all alone in the world to fend for myself.

I do hope my faith in humanity hasnt been completely destroyed, there must be some nice folk out there who understand that although I am a clever dude I can not produce my own food or build my own abode.

Firstly to say Chestnut Cat Sanctuary has officially been declared the GREATEST sanctuary ever. Ok... so maybe not an official award but if there were such a thing we would win it no doubt. The care and dedication to animal welfare at the sanctuary is simply the best. For all of you fabulous people who volunteer your time to spend with the sanctuary's cats we think your truly great! From the spontaneous food donations, bedding, chicken treats and lots and lots of cuddles, the cats (and us!) would be lost without you! It is lovely to be amongest such a great team of animal loving people dedicated to making the lives of our homeless cats in the sanctuary very pleasurable (so much so it is tempting to set up camp and move in myself!! What could be more like heaven than being surrounded by so many fab felines!!)

Talking of fabulous felines it is very sad to have to say one of my gorgeous girlies, Ellie, passed away 2 weeks ago. She was the sweetest little angel and touched everyone's heart who cuddled her and prepared her scrambled egg for breakfast. Only 600g and almost 1 year old., treated like the princess she was and cuddled to the end. Ellie like all the thousands of other heartbreaking gems will never be forgotten.

Ok I warn you now get out the kleenex your going to need it for this one......................................... I will give you a second or two to compose yourselves and dab at those eyes which are probably already weeping at the antipation of what it coming next... I shall approach this in the same way I approach reading books (I just read the last line first that way I know how it all ends and can read safe in the knowledge that everything turns out ok!)

So heres the last line first! We are Jasper and Sky, we love our new home and our new owners our story does have a happy ending.

Our story is sad but not uncommon to tell. Our owners thought that if they left us behind when they moved we would be able to find food, warmth, love and shelter. Opps.... that wasnt very kind or loving? we spent 3 years living outside and slept on old discarded furniture. Our fairy godmother sadly didnt turn up. We were rescued along with our brother Spike (who by the way has the silkiest fur gives you soft kisses) and given what we deserved a loving home to rest our fab paws on. You will never know how grateful we are. Purrs forever x x x

Everyone at the sanctuary very much likes to hear how cats that have been re-homed at getting on. It makes all the hard work, the sad times and dedication all worthwhile when you hear how pampered some of our cats are now. With the majority having a very hard start in life it is rewarding for us to find them new loving forever homes. With that in mind if you have homed a cat from us and would like to email it to me (alison@chestnutcatsanctuary.co.uk) to display on the blog I would be very happy to do that for you. Remember to tell me the year you got your cat, the cats name and a little bit about how the cat is getting on all pampered stories welcome!

We dont often forget a cat despite homing almost 5000 in the past 8 years we remember them all as they all have their own characters and traits. We cant gaurantee to remember the human folk as they often blur in our love for the felines around here (which is the way it should be!)

So to start us off Tonka (picture inset) the cat with the one white whisker would like to say to her new owners how pleased she is with her new home if they can keep up the level of pampering forever she will be most impressed. Tonka had many people look at her who didnt like the white whisker we think she looks fab and she has found owners who think so too!

Mittens needs a new home having been at the sanctuary for over 4 months. She is a wonderful cat loves to be cuddled, enjoys sitting on your lap and has the sweetest nature. Best for a home with older children Mittens does not like to be pulled about particularly with the tail. She would make a smashing pet and great companion!

Carrots is simply fab you open the door to his pen and he comes plodding down with the anticipation that cuddles are going to be waiting for him at the end of the ladder. He will sit in your arms for ages nesting his soft ginger furry head against you. Carrots is not one to say no to a lap and would be a fabulous companion. He has never been outside so that might be a bit of suprise probably best homed as a flat cat! (not squashed a cat used to living indoors!)

A special mention for some of our stunning cats who for one reason or another don't seem to be sparkling

"Mittens" - An 18month old girl who has had kittens loves a fuss on her terms, likes a comfy lap, has a good appetite, hates other cats and has a surprising extra digit on each of her paws hence the name! (I am lolling about in Pen 9!)

"Treacle" An adorable 2 year old poser ginger cat who simply adores to play, play and play some more. Would be a fantastic companion for someone who is looking for a real companion cat. Will need lots of toys and space to work off all his energy (find me in Pen 11)

"Thomas" A huge all black boy who loves his woman, what a sensible fella?! Has paws the size of a panther's and the character to match your not likely to find him hiding under the couch!

"Rosie" a 4 year old tabby cat for those up for a challenge will offer lots of love if you have the time to get to know her otherwise wow betide the person who tries to stroke another cat in her pen without giving her a fuss too def. one for the single life.

"Katie" the tabby cat to join you on your new years resolution to loose a few ££! she likes breakfast, lunch and dinner in bed! there isnt much that can shift her out apart from her all white companion who likes to get her on her toes every once in a while. Looking for a quiet home as she was used to an elderly lady.

And a short note to mention Ellie, our much loved sweetie girl has gone for some foster care to give her the love and time she needs to put on weight. We are always thinking of you!

Happy New Year Everyone!

A little late but hey it has been busy around here! Over 20 cats have come in during the past week and not one as gorgeous as me!! Modest? perhaps? someone has got to be!
I am sure you all know by now I am Ellie. I have a little baggage we are not talking suitcases and bags! I have an irritable bowel not the sexiest of illness but who wouldnt be a little irritable with my problems? I only eat a very few foods which can get boring. I am looking for a very special home with someone with lots of feline experience and buckets of TLC!

Ahhh calm has been restored, Christmas has past! I am enjoying a snooze on my favourite shelf it is a far cry from the car park where I was living. There weren't many comfy places to rest ones paws on.

Still I have been rescued and am now awaiting for someone to come along and find me irresistible. I like to pose a lot and will often be lying on my back with my paws up in the air. My current abode is Pen 13 not a bad spot really you get to see everything that is going on.

There are quite a few cats waiting for a new home . I will tell you a little bit but only if you promise to come and say hello to me when you arrive! I have to admit I rather like a couple of the girlys here at the moment so if your looking for a female to add some sparkle to your life heres the run down!

"Princess" a petite 8 month old tortie / tabby with very soft fur ( or so i have heard although who knows what goes on here when the human folk have left?!) likes to pose like me and show off her cute white paws.

"Puddy" a placid white and black 2 year old able to stand her own but with a gentle side to her nature.

"Emma" a real tough nut not one for the wimps out there likes to be fussed lots but woe betide any other cat trying to get a look it def. a girl who wants to remain single!

"Chicken and Pinky" a great twosome; double the fun! I can see them as they are opposite my pen. Chicken is the confident tortie girl ready for a fuss anytime whilst Pinky the tabby girly likes you to take things a bit slower.

"Maisy" a shy 2 year old girl who needs a confidence boost but will clearly blossom in the right home given time and love.

A Cat Sanctuary is not just for Christmas!

It is that wonderful festive time of year again when many sanctuarys and rescue centres across the country receive a large influx of cats as owners go away for the holidays and sadly do want the responsibility of taking care of the once cute and cuddly kitten not a fully grown cat. Consequently the sanctuary is packed with fabulous furry felines desperately looking for a loving forever home.

It is always difficult to pick as they are of course all deserving and fabulous! So on a blind date theme...... If your looking for

"Mr Cute and Cuddly" the Tabby and white boy currently residing in Pen 10 is your man. He loves to be picked up and snuggles into you very tightly. If your happy to have your face licked and kissed then head straight for Mr I need to be loved! (picture inset!)

"Mr Ahhhhhh thats so sad!" is waiting for you in Pen 11. He has recently been hit by a car but survived intact. Mr Brain Damaged Boy is surely going to win the sympathy vote every time! His head wobbles as he walks but dont let that fool you into thinking he is not the purrfect feline companion! At 18 months old he is a playful cutie who loves a tummy tiggle and adores playing with furry mice. Unlikely to be at the sanctuary for long with his winning character and gorgeous silky fur.

"Mr and Mrs Ive eaten too much Christmas Pudding" aka Lucky and Whisky. OK...... so the diet needs to start now! Right NOW!! forget the New Years Resolutions you are going to need to be firm with the food with this pair but in return they will be faithful loving companions always keen to roll over and be fussed for hours. A wonderful addition to any family.

"Miss Scared of her own skin" Cassie is now the sanctuary's longest resident rescued from a houseof 50 cats she is surely going to be looking for a home with at least one feline to become friends with. She is going to be a project for the right home a wonderful opportunity to show that given time any cat from any background can learn to trust humans again. Not one to join a home of lively ankle bitters! (young children)

And finally for now... Mr Warm and Fuzzy "Freddy" a sad Christmas tale deserving of a happy ending? At 14 years old he has coped well with coming into a busy sanctuary and is even putting up with the kittens in his pen jumping about all over the place at a time when he surely deserves to be putting his feet up? He is a handsome gent in need of the simplier things in life, a warm spot to sleep, lots of fuss and regular meals. Freddy would be the ideal gentle companion for someone to want to love and take care of. Not our oldest resident by far! Age discrimination is not just for the 2 legged people around here!

And to let all our dedicated volunteers know Buttons our fabulous ex-longest resident has found a fabulous home to be loved and spoilt rotten., It was fabulous to see you gone, we hope you are really enjoy your new pad! Dont forget to write to tell us how you are getting on!

Brrrr it's far too cold outside - do you think she will notice I have climbed in the duvet?!

Well for all of you who are avid fans of the sanctuary's cats you will be very pleased to know......... "Hope" has finally been re-homed!! Her new owners are familiar with timid cats as their previous feline hid under the sofa for 9 months! Hopefully Hope wont be as nervous as that and relax in her new home which she undoubtedly deserves.

"Buttons" a 6 month old black and white is our longest resident. We are looking for a real Cinderella ending for him please with a request for a fairy godmother or two! Def. a moggie for an experienced cat owner but with the potential for lots of love and affection in return in time.

Two of our new residents deserve a special mention Freddy a delightful gentle 14 year old tabby arrived from an elderly care home would be ideal as a loving companion and Patch a 16 year old girly who would give anything for the odd treat of tuna every now and then. Both are irresistable and in need of a peaceful home to purr to their hearts content.

If your seeking a pair of friendly felines look no further than brothers "George and Puss" or Mum and Son "Lucky and Whisky" both pairs equally deserving and very good all round affectionate cats.

Finally if a breed is more your thing we have a tortie girl with a face worth kissing! She is an "Exotic" breed left at a vets a softie with no name. A real cutie with fur!

Hi everyone! its an alien floating head (or maybe not...!) argh where have my paws gone??!

Being a kitten and very lively I have just been rescued after trying to fall in the washing bowl while this kind person is trying to clean out my pen. It has been a bit of a wild night playing with my brothers and sisters! Still what would you expect from someone as innocent looking as me?!

As penance I have had to have my photo taken.

I know I know I could have at least tried to smile still it is all a bit scary having only been alive for 6weeks I am still not sure if these human folk are friend or foe! Maybe you can convince me that it is good to relax and enjoy being cuddled (you will have to convince one of the other too as us kittens are only homed in pairs and definitely not as presents so count me off your shopping list!).

While I am here I just want to say on behalf of all the rescue cats a big thank you to the Alice Noakes Charitable Trust for their grant. We are very grateful for their support to Chestnut Cat Sanctuary! I will update you shortly on what we have spent the grant on. Wacth this space.

Arent I a real cutie?!! (and the kitten is quite sweet too!!). Thought I would take the time to update you with the cats coming and going from the sanctuary recently.
Some of those homed this month include Ben, Jerry, Henry, Timmy, Puma, Charlie, Buster, Dennis, Olive, Anouska, Cindy-Lou, Harriet, Bella, Phoebe, Lucy, and a beautiful grey persian called Owen. Lots and lots of other rescued cats who havent had names have also found new homes we hope you are all being spoilt rotten (and kept indoors for at least 6 weeks please to ensure you stay safe!)
For those of you who are thinking of coming to the sanctuary to get a new cat we have plenty of gorgeous moggies to tempt you. Georgie, a gorgeous tubby tabby and white female was left at the sanctuary with an eye infection is a very friendly soul. Tyger, a young soft tabby likes to hide under his fleece it is very warm and snug in there when you stroke him. Marmalade, a ginger tom and Buttons, a 6 month old black and white are both complete wimps love each each other vey much and are going as a pair. Toby is a handsome dude just looking for a warm spot to rest his paws on while 16 year old Patch has had a very rough life. You can find him curled up fast alseep in pen 3 just waiting for a stroke under the chin.
And what about me? yes I am a sweetie my name is Ellie, I got my new home on Friday. My owner loves me to bits I even get to sleep on her pillow. I am a little demanding as I like to fussed and cuddled a lot! but hey when you look this cute you can afford to request all the attention. Hope you are all not too frightened of all the loud bangs this weekend Ellie x x

Many congratulations to the Chestnut’s imaginatively named “CATS R US!” Team for coming 7th in the pub quiz to celebrate the end of kitten season. (we really thought long and hard to get the team name just right!) And yes there were more than seven teams!). A surprisingly amount of specific knowledge was known about England’s rugby team players – I am sure they were studied purely for their technical ball skills!

Well done for everyone’s contribution, we are clearly a very clever bunch! – our team Captain was an inspiration to us all?! but at least she informed everyone in the pub if they were looking to rehome a cat Chestnuts is the place to be!

* The end of kitten season may have been celebrated but due to the warm weather during September and early October many more un-neutered pregnant mums have come into the sanctuary so kittens (to be homed in pairs for feline company) are unfortunately still plentiful!

Celebrity Amanda Drew who was “Doctor May” in the soap Eastenders and her fabulous rescued greyhound “Ron” joined the Chestnut Girls at the October half-term Family Fun event “Paws for Thought” organised in conjunction with the Animal Welfare Team at Epping Forest District Council, the Guide Dogs for the Blind, Pets As Therapy, The Retired Greyhound Trust and The Dogs Trust. It was lovely to meet so many adorable dogs who were not fazed by all the attention from the little ones that they received.
A huge thank you to all the Chestnut Volunteers who took part over the four days and gave up their free time to talk to families about the work of the cat sanctuary, how to care for cats and highlight the importance of getting cats and kittens neutered. It was lovely to meet all the people who have re-homed a Chestnut cat and hear how they are doing. A big paws of gratitude to those who supported the sanctuary Gill, Hamish, Charlotte, Helen, Marion, Jackie, Danielle, Debbie, Helena, Tracy and Lewis your time was greatly appreciated! (it would be a catastrophe if I forgotten anyone so please let me know!)

Hi there!

My name is Maisie, I am a gorgeous 7 year old girly. My owners moved abroad in the Summer and didnt want me to go with them! Hence I am looking for a new pad, I'm not much trouble; just need to be fed, watered, with somewhere warm to sleep and a few cuddles would be nice!

I have been passed by a few times but if you think I could be the cat for you I am in Pen 12!

While I am here I will tell you a little bit about the cutie "Owen" I fancy in Pen 9! He has a mane to be proud of, I could snuggle up with him and be very cosy! A gentle soul looking for a home to rest his sumptuous paws in. Owen and Thomas (black and white cat) are two of the many cats here left as the result of a relationship breakdown. Some of my girly competition with the boys includes the tabby threesome Lilly, Cassie and Grace (obviously not as wondeful as me!) but still all deserving of a new home.

Anyway if you do pop down I would always appreciate a stroke under the chin!

Well done Reanna your picture was fab! We love the name "Moonlight" and fancy doing a bit of it ourselves some time soon. Paws to all those at Chestnut who helped us home 4000 cats which were all neutered as well to prevent any more unwanted cats and kittens what a fab job you have all done!

Wow what a month September has been! Some of my old friends have finally found their paws are now resting on soft and comfy beds in new homes. I expect they are being treated to caviar and cream whilst I am still stuck here. So enough of them let me tell you a little bit about me! I am gorgeous as you can see from my picture. I came for sanctuary early in summer with my 6 month old kitten. I really wish someone had neutered me when I was 6 months old as having a baby took a lot out of me and I was very thin! Still they have fed me well especially that woman who comes on a Tuesday night although she seems to try to kiss me all over which gets in the way of the more important things such as supper! I adore a treat of fresh chicken and am happy to sit on anyone’s lap who might have some to give me. I am not overly keen on children and will put you in your place with a little nip if you should stroke my tail as I prefer to swish it about in your face. I like to be treated like a princess, if you come to see me I am often laid full stretch on the top shelf on my blanket. My fur is as soft as silk so what are you waiting for??? Surely a nip or two won't put you off giving me a chance of a home? (I might even stop once I get the chance to go home).

An appeal from some of our April 2007 Cats!

Alice in Wonderland – A fabulous petite five year old tabby and white girl. Likes her own company and human fuss, not over keen on other cats but will tolerate them. Loves to pad her bed with her paws and have a head rub. Would gladly chase a white rabbit or two down a hole for you! Pixie a 3 year old white princess! Probably be best as an only cat as she likes to have all your fuss, likes to be the centre of your attention. Needs a chance to become the pearly white star she is! All the cats above have been at the sanctuary for many months – if you feel you have the right home waiting for them drop in to meet them during our opening hours. P.S Smudge, Fudge and Spot send their huge paws of thanks for their new homes (see blog 09.08.07 for our handsome pictures!). The sanctuary staff will miss seeing your gorgeous faces! X

An appeal from some of our April 2007 Cats!
Tammy and Kitty 2 year old tabby and white sisters who adore each other, prefer dry food to wet and need a home without any ankle bitters (young children!). Tammy is the confident bigger sister who loves to greet you and have a fuss or brush. Likes to sleep in the same bed as her sister Kitty. Kitty will take time to trust a new owner likes a gentle stroke, not keen on lots of noise. Need to be homed together as they are inseparable.

Epping Forest District Councillor Malcolm Woollard joined the volunteers at Chestnut Cat Sanctuary, Registered Charity on Bank Holiday Monday to celebrate the end of summer with a fabulous strawberry cream tea. Marion Sweeney, the sanctuary’s Community Champion’s Volunteer, pictured inset with Councillor Woollard organised the tea making over 50 cups of tea and cream scones. The sanctuary homeless cats were not forgotten and enjoyed their chance to have a taste of the delicious cream! A wonderful time was had by all. The sanctuary would like to thank our dedicated volunteers who regularly support the sanctuary, your time and help is greatly appreciated. Looking for love……

Romeo Romeo where for art thou Romeo? I am sure Juliet didn’t have to wait around this long to find her true love!! Apparently, so I have heard from listening to the people here, I am what they call “a long term resident” the longest in-fact; I’ve been here since April this year! The accommodations not bad, foods ok but company could be improved on! They have put with a ginger tom, he’s not for me really he doesn’t like sharing much, still it will do for now.
Some might say I am too fussy but I have high standards and just haven’t found my Romeo yet. My name is Tatiana, I know it sounds like I am a Russian Princess! I am a beautiful soul though; if I let you stroke me I have the softest fur and the sweetest face. In the afternoons when it's all quiet I come out and let this one girl here stroke me I often lick her hands in gratitude as I do like a fuss but find it hard to cope around lots of noise and people.
As you can see I am a petite tabby with green eyes. Sounds like a personal ad? Well if you fancy a date pop along to the sanctuary to see me, if you’ve got young children your probably not for me as I do need a quiet home. Still its worth coming to see me anyway as I am sure my room mate could do with finding his Juliet too.

One, Two, Three look at ME! What a fab trio we are eh?! I am Spot, this is Fudge and if you look carefully you can see our brother Smudge. We are all gorgeous boys even if I do say so myself (opps i'm blushing!).

If you have a loving home for three handsome, gentle giants, who adore a fuss then we are ready and waiting for you!! We have been cared for extremely well by our previous owner but sadly she has had to go into care and we have been parted. We miss her lots and know that she would be thrilled if we could all go to a new home together. If that sounds like mission possible to you come and meet us we are just waiting to be all loved up. Until then I’ll keep a look out for the boys so I can see you coming.......

The Dfes Community Champions Grant has sponsored the "Everyone Can Initiate Miracles" Scheme designed to encourage volunteers that everyones contribution helps to make a big difference to the lives of the sanctuary cats. The ECIM Scheme provides volunteers with structured weekly activities to take part in, certificates to achieve and a once-a-month social event to come along to! So if you have got an hour to spare why not come along and find out what it is all about or contact Jackie on weekdays at the sanctuary. See us advertised in this week's Epping Forest Guardian (we are on page 3!).

August Monthly Event: Bank Holiday Monday 27th August 1-3pm ECIM Volunteers: Come and joing the cats who got the cream by finding sanctuary and the chance of a new home at Chestnuts for a strawberry tea!

The local Thornwood Carnival is due to take place today (subject to weather!), where the Chestnut Cat Sanctuary and Rescue Centre has a float dressed up as a cat! Our cat rescue essex centre is situated in Epping and open 7 days a week where we have many cats and kittens awaiting homes.

May 7th. Bank Holiday Monday...Open Day.

We held a 10am-4pm Open Day primarily to welcome prospective Volunteers for the Cat Rescue centre. The day went very successfully and we had MANY visitors. Serving coffeee/tea & cakes we also raised £100, as well as re-homing some cats and kittens. It will become an annual event!

Saturday 24th. February 2007.
We have successfully received confirmation from the Charities Commission our registration as a Registered Charity!
This is great news as we can claim back 28.2p in every £ donated, from HM Customs & Revenue. Our homeless cats and kittens should receive extra funding.
We can also make appplications for larger grants of which surfacing the car park (approx. £20,000) is now an urgent requirement for disabled staff and clients alike.

hello cat lovers everywhere!

My blogs over the next few weeks will be a bit erratic so please bear with me. I am just about to adopt 2 little girls and I have a few tough weeks ahead, though I will be stopping by occasionally to let you know about the wonderful new cats that happen to come our way!

This weeks cats are no exception....

Puss is a beautiful black and white 2 year old male. He has been a stray for 1 year and it's probably because of this that he is a little bit cautious when he first meets you. Puss needs an experienced understanding owner that will give him a bit of time to settle in to his new home. Puss is good with other cats and older children.

Prince is a sweet fluffy 7 year old male. Sadly his owner died and prince ended up with an allergy which made him look a bit bedraggled. The good news is that he is all better now so he will soon start looking spectacular again!! Prince is a laid back chap - as you can see - and like to chat (cat lovers will understand!!!).

Hope you don't miss my blogs too much! Keep checking back - I promise I will return! Cat rescue centre is based in Epping Essex.

Hello

well at least the snow has gone and we can all get on with life as normal :( It was very beautiful though wasn't it!!!

Well here are 3 little ones that would love nothing better than curling up in front of a fire or radiator so let me introduce you to them....

Chilli is a sweet 5 year old. She is a little shy and needs to be able to trust you though she is lovely when she does. When you come and see her just let her have a little sniff of your hand and she'll let you stroke her - and hasn't she just got the saddest little face....

Chilli would be a great only cat though she is used to children.

Jakey - in complete contrast - would be all over you like a rash!!! He is lovely and cuddly! Jakey was abandoned and has lived the outdoor kind of life for a while so this adorable 8 year old is ready to settle with someone who can give him lots of love and fuss!!! He is good with other cats and children.

May is an absolutely gorgeous grey ball of fluff. She is a sprightly (and I really mean that) 13 year old. Sadly her owners were going abroad so were unable to take her with them. She is a very loving and extremely talkative cat - so she would be great if you like to have a cat that answers back!!!

Hello

It's a bit chilly isn't it!! What you need is a lovely cat to cuddle up too!!!

I have picked the sweetist cats in the world today - the type of cats that I would take home with me if I could......

Max and Chloe are very loving, as you can see. Max is the black and white one, typical boy - wanting to be pampered by a girl!! They are both 9 and they are with us as their owner moved to a flat where they were not allowed to have pets. They really are a lovely pair, friendly and gentle. They are good with children of all ages and other cats.

Harley is another gentle cat, he is also very loving and sweet. Sadly, Harley is with us because his owner died. He loves a garden and would be better suited as an only cat.

Harley is 8 years old and needs someone to come and give him the forever home he deserves. He's gorgeous, isn't he!!!

Our Girls at Pets at Home!

On our Monthly visit to "Pets at Home", Romford store weekend 27/28th. January we collected £420 and a load of tins of cat food. Thanks Everyone! The Pets at Home store are piloting a scheme "Adoption-second chance of happiness" and Thanks to the store we are allowed to go there and make collections. Every month we adopt a theme, which this weekend was Australia Day as you can see by Sheila dressed as a kangaroo and Marion as a "Sheila". Thank you too, girls!

Hello cat lovers everywhere!!!

Did you know that it has been scientifically proven that owning cats is good for our health and can decrease the occurrence of high blood pressure and other illnesses. What better reason do you need to come and visit us then???

With two little lovelies like these I don't know how you can stop yourself running for the door....

Milly is a gorgeous, friendly cat. She loves a bit of pampering though she is very gentle at the same time.

Milly is 8 years old and would be better to be homed as the only cat. She would suit a quieter home and is good with children over 10.

With a face as sweet as this I don't thing that she will be about for long.....

Winnie is a beautiful 10 year old tortie. She was involved in a road accident and sadly lost one of her front legs - though don't let that put you off.... she's a strong girl and it doesn't bother her at all!! She loves a fuss and still does all the things any other cat would do!

Winnie, like Milly, would suit a quieter home and preferably be the only cat.

She is a really lovely cat and deserves to live out the rest of her 8 lives with someone who can cherish her.

Hello

Well once again I have some gorgeous cats for you - mind you - they are all gorgeous to me!!!

Puss and Smiler are a sweet loving pair - so much so that they never seem to leave each others side - this was the best picture I could get!!!

Puss is a 12 year old girl and Smiler is a 10 year old boy. Their owner is moving to a flat and could not take them. They are a sweet loving pair looking for someone to love them for the rest of their years.....

Neo is a 3 year old boy who loves his fuss. He has been a little spoilt in the past and would benefit from an experienced owner. He is definitely a dominant male - though if you like a cat who likes a fuss - then Neo is for you. I think he is brilliant - he is loving, gentle and all over you like a rash!!!

Lottery Award!
Epping Forest District and Buckhurst Hill Parish Councillor Malcolm Woollard joined the team of dedicated volunteers at Chestnut Cat Sanctuary to award certificates for the P.A.W’s (People and Animal Welfare Support) Programme jointly funded by the Co-Operative Community Dividend and Awards for All Community Lottery Grant.
Hamish McCalister and Sue Gamage (pictured inset) received their certificates from Mr Woollard for completed Stage 1 and 2 respectively of the P.A.W’s Programme. Hamish is a certified Cat Cuddler and Sue a highly proficient caring Cat Groomer. Both vital assets to the Chestnut Team. Jodie, a Year 11 Work Experience Student from a local school (pictured far right) describes her time at Chestnut Sanctuary as “magical, a wonderful opportunity to be involved in caring for such adorable cats, no two days are ever the same”.
Freud, a blue Persian pictured in the arms of volunteer Gill Beard adores his fuss and cuddles and is looking to find a loving home with his sister Sasha. Both are indoor cats who love being groomed. Home checks are required.

The first thing I want to say is THANK YOU to every one who has come to us and rescued a cat in December and January. We have had a record couple of months and lots of cats have been given a second chance of having a happy home!

I also want to say well done to every one at the sanctuary who has worked hard to make sure all our cats go to good homes as quickly as possible.

GREAT NEWS ALL ROUND!!!

And here are my cats of the week - in fact I could not believe how many friendly, loving cats wanted cuddles last night - it was really hard for me to decide who I was going to put on the blog this week.

My first is a great ginger boy who's owners moved and left him..... He is about 6 years old and loves his fuss and food. He is a lovely gentle cat, good with children and other cats. Isn't he just gorgeous with one of the saddest faces I've seen in a while..... A real ginger tom - nice and solid though gentle and cuddly!!

Susie and Kitty are mother and daughter and are just sooooo friendly! They were brought to us as their owner was too ill to look after them as she wanted to, and that love is shown in just what a good job she has done in bringing them up. They are a lovely, sweet pair who love fuss though are very gentle with you. They are good with children and so lovely I was tempted to bring them home with me!!!

Susie is 5 years old and Kitty is 4. This is Susie....... she loves her belly being stroked. I think she was showing off in front of the camera too!

........and this is Kitty. She was very interested in my camera and I just think this is a lovely likeness of her!!

Better be quick - I don't think any of these cats will be here for long!!

I'm back!!! And when I went to the sanctuary this week (the first time since Christmas day!) I was pleased to see loads of cats have been homed! Thank you to everyone who came to see us and went home with a new furry friend!! You wonderful, wonderful people!!!

This week I have 3 stars for you.

Pickles and Felix are two sweet, large tabbies. One female and one male. They are both 5 years old and sadly their owner went into a care home and couldn't take them so they have been given to us to find them a new forever home. They are both very lovely, though have only been with us a couple of days and are still getting used to being away from their owner - that's why they look a little sad. They need a quiet home with a garden and a new family that will help them get back to their normal happy lifes.

Mikey is an 18 month old boy and a little beauty. He has lived outside for most of his life - so you can imagine what he thinks of us keeping him locked in a pen all day!!! He is a sweet chap who needs a home with a garden (which he will probably refuse to come out of when you first bring him home - until the novelty wears off anyway!). He is good with other cats and children.

Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Well I have just had the best Christmas day ever.... with all my little furry babies at the sanctuary (does that sound a bit sad!!! - well it stopped me eating til I popped!)

I have two great cats for you today.... both of which are flat cats.

Alfie is such a loving, friendly cat. He is about 7 years old and likes other cats and children.

Sadly, Alfie is deaf and blind in his right eye and has some sight in his left, though he does not let it affect him, he happily walks around his pen and get on with the other cats.

Alfie really deserves a good home with someone who will give him the love he wants to give his new owner. Could that be you.....

Sally is a beautiful 1 year old cat.

Sally is a shy cat who needs an experienced owner to help her flourish! Each week I see her she gets braver and more friendly - just imagine if you were with her every day!

She is great with other cats and children over 10.

I hope you have all enjoyed your Christmas day - I'll be back in a couple of weeks with an update.

Xmas Day 2006....life goes on as normal at the Sanctuary!
